A long time ago, one of our directors left university and got a job. On his first day he discovered (to his alarm) that he had to get on the phone and call a long list of customers for their advertising copy. The next day, the same thing happened. He recalls: "I hated it! I didn't like being on the phone at all, but I needed the job and I was ambitious, so I stuck it out."
Soon, every day he was on the phone. He was just about coping with this, when his manager decided it would be good if he had a spell in classified advertising - next thing he was in classified sales, making 40 cold calls a day. After a while, he didn't mind calling at all and even better - he was hitting targets and making good commission. He just wishes that there had been some good training around to lessen the pain of the learning curve.
